Editor,Congratulations to all the sisters in Rwanda – better a single mother than a couple constantly in incessant domestic wars in front of innocent children.

I am sure you all know a number of homes on fire around your neighbourhoods every evening who think that, as long as they are known as "married”, that’s the sacrifice worth it. Before the parents get swallowed in fights, they have to first of all think of their adorable children and how those quarrels will affect them in life.My husband abandoned us when our handsome son was only ten years old. I was very sick at the time, but I didn’t die because I had no other alternatives than staying stronger to live to see my son growing into a responsible man. I cared for him all alone all these years; he’s now 26 years old and it makes me happy to see him near me.Recently his father – who for several years didn’t support me morally and financially – suddenly showed up. The day he came for his son made me incomparably happy.I am a happy mother of a happy son who enjoys good relationship with his father. Other than the fact that, I am still alive and my son’s relationship with his father is my biggest pride.Umubyeyi, Kigali, Rwanda******************************I have been closely following how gradually things evolved in our societies; is it not time for us as a country to start discussing how our laws can accept and give entitled rights to single parents? I seriously feel sorry for women who get all bad treatments just because they are single parents. We need to move away from some of the things we see as taboo.Christian, FranceReaction to the story, "When society looks down on single parents”, (Society Magazine, July 19)
