Close to one million SIM cards that have not yet been registered could be switched off as the deadline for the completion of the six-month registration exercise draws closer. According to Jean Baptist Mutabazi, the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (Rura) head of communication and media regulation, all SIM cards that will not have been registered by July 31 will be switched off the network by Rura. Mutabazi also revealed that about 85% of the six million mobile phone subscribers had registered their SIM cards by Tuesday this week. MTN, with 3,522,555 subscribers has already registered 2,929,486, Tigo has registered 1,665,767 of its 1,876,506 subscribers, while 746,874 of the 873,631 Airtel users have registered.
