GASABO - The East African Community (EAC) deputy secretary general in charge of fast tracking the political federation, Beatrice Kiraso, has hailed Rwanda for her efforts in the fast tracking process of the EAC political federation. 

This was during a two-day evaluation meeting that studied reports from the national consultative committees of Rwanda and Burundi on the fast tracking of the EAC political federation at Hotel Novotel yesterday.

Kiraso said that according to preliminary reports, Rwanda’s fast tracking process is on course.

"There are physical changes and these are not by accident. They are a result of the leadership and population in Rwanda that have taken time to work on them,” she said.

While underscoring the importance of peace and security in regional integration, Kiraso said that her office was now working on an early warning mechanism for conflicts that would rid the region of vices like drug trafficking and the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

Winifred Nyirahirwa, a member of Rwanda’s consultative committee, said that their nationwide visits were mainly marked by consultations on free movement of goods, good governance programmes, education and culture. 

Burundi’s Leonce Ndarugiye said that his country’s efforts in the fast tracking process were progressing well, adding that they were also copying Rwanda on how she has managed to quickly reconstruct herself after the 1994 Genocide.

Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania presented their reports to the EAC Secretariat in August last year.
