Eatingout: Butare’s Barthos: A place for art lovers

After only three months, Beux Arts Hotel Sebukangaga, known simply as Barthos, has become a major dinning place for people traveling in this region and those on a Burundi journey. Located just a stones throw away from the university gate, its restaurant offers just about the best meals to the students and the community. Most of the dishes are typical African, just like the marvelous paintings around the restaurant. The grass thatched bar and wooden tables take your mind back to ancient Africa.

Students flock for drinks in the late hours of the evening. It looks like the place has no closing hours. Music gentle plays throughout the night, as the crowd grows in numbers. The young are deep in conversations as they sip on their drinks.

When they are not eating chips and brouchette (Frw1,200), they are chewing on omelet special, which according to the menu goes for Frw2,000.

An average meal goes for as little as Frw1,500. A beer costs Frw900 and a soda Frw300. We opted for the magnificent rabbit meat.

So soft and tender, within seconds of tucking in we’d ordered more! The second whole rabbit came after we had broken down the first one with half a litter of Waragi.

Vegetarians are not recognised on the menu but the manager Jean Claude says any time one appears, they make sure he is alright.

The other good point is the ample parking space available, the security guards there make you very sure that no fly will tamper with your car.

If you are heading to Butare, try and see this place most especially those who want to get enjoy some beautiful art.
