When talking about why Rwandan students may seek to go for further studies abroad we cannot ignore the role played by the international schools that have come up of late. Many well to do parents and expatriates living in Rwanda have embraced the idea of international schools that offer Western syllabi on top of the local curriculum. Schools like Green Hills Academy, Riviera High School, International School of Kigali-Rwanda, Ecole Belge de Kigali, Hope Kids Academy as well as Antoine de St. Exupery offer Western curricula such as the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGSCE) or the International Baccalaureate (IB) and at the end of the day many of their students end up in foreign universities. Many expatriates who do not expect to stay in Rwanda forever prefer taking their children to such universities because it makes it easy for them to fit in back home once they leave Rwanda. Other locals with enough money to spend also prefer these schools and continue to part with money to see that their children can attend the best universities in Europe, North America or Asia. Every parent aspires to offer their child the best including education and this has seen many in Rwanda embracing these schools which to a large extent feed mainly into foreign universities.
