Kigali dwellers have been urged to maintain sanitation in the city by desisting from dumping waste in undesignated places.Fidel Ndayisaba, the City mayor, made the remarks last week as he closed a three-month hygienic campaign in which the best performers were rewarded.The competition attracted all the city’s sectors. Of the 35 sectors that make up the City of Kigali, Kanombe came first with 88 per cent, which alongside Gikondo, the third with 84 per cent, made Kicukiro district emerge the overall winner.Kanombe received a motorcycle, a trophy and a certificate, while Kicukiro district was rewarded a trophy and a certificate.Rwezamenyo sector of Nyarugenge came second with 85 per cent, making the district take the second position.Both Rwezamenyo and Gikondo were awarded certificates.The last three sectors were Kacyiru (in Gasabo) with 59 per cent, Muhima (Nyarugenge),with 59 per cent and Kimisagara (Nyarugenge) with 55 per cent. These were also given certificates.Desist from littering  According to Ndayisaba, achievements considered in general included: the greening done in various places, sanitation in various facilities, including restaurants, bars, hotels, lodges, health facilities and schools."We have to put more efforts in promoting and sustaining hygiene. It is our duty to make this happen,” Ndayisaba said.He urged Kigali dwellers to desist from littering and called on business dealers to invest in cleanness sustainability related activities.Florence Uwayisaba, Kicukiro social affairs vice mayor, attributed their success to team work spirit and the commitment to reach the targeted goals."Sanitation is a key pillar to people’s welfare ,” Donatien Murenzi, Kanombe sector  Executive Secretary said.She cited construction of new public toilets, promoting cleanliness in schools, churches, and restaurants, among the factors that contributed to the sector’s win."These awards are a motivation. We will do more to maintain this position in the forthcoming competition,” Murenzi said.IGP Emmanuel Gasana promised a pick-up, the construction of a Police office and a trophy to the sector that will emerge the winners in the forthcoming campaign starting June to December.
