Bank Populaire has cautioned its customers to remain vigilant to avoid fraudsters purporting to be the bank’s staff.According to John Magara, head of marketing and communication department, the bank issued the warning after it was discovered that some fraudsters are using the bank’s name to fleece money from clients by staging false promotions and events where clients are tipped to have won a grand prize of $8,000."On Thursday alone we received complaints from seven clients from different parts of the country, including Nyagatare, Rusizi, Gasabo, Nayrugenge and Huye districts complaining that they were being tipped through SMS that they had won $8,000 in a supposed Bank Populaire promotion event,” Magara said yesterday. Magara also added that the conmen are not necessarily targeting only their clients but everyone out there. He also said that at the moment, there are no promotions or events of such nature that Bank Populaire is organising and, therefore, the public must not be hoodwinked."We have engaged our security department which is in touch with police to ensure that the culprits are detected and brought to book.  If we have any events,  we always engage the media we don’t make private calls.”
