In the past one month or so, the Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority has been under fire from power users over load shedding and unplanned power outages.However, it has turned out that, actually, some of these blackouts are caused by vandals and thieves. This is big problem that cannot be handled by the EWSA alone, calling for involvement of all citizens, especially power users, if it is to be eliminated. EWSA should not be ‘crucified’ unjustly when vandals go on rampage, destroying its installations. It is incumbent upon every citizen to report the vandals to the Police so that they are apprehended. Although the utility is supposed to ensure safety of its installations, it needs the support of every one. Remember, EWSA cannot be everywhere, all the time (putting in mind that they are not the Police). Let’s not only focus on chastising the service provider when we could partly be responsible for poor service delivery by EWSA.  So, if you are in Kigali, Huye, Ngororero, Nyanza, Ngoma or Musanze, where the EWSA survey indicates that human-induced rapture of pylon anchors and cutting of power lines is rampant, be on the lookout and report the vandals.Besides the vandalism being sabotage to the economy, it could mean life and death if power lines are cut and left hanging. That’s why we all must join EWSA and the security forces to tame this thuggery and destruction forthwith. EWSA cannot go it alone.However, the utility should not lie back; it should aim to do better, especially now that it is looking to the private sector to enhance power generation.
