The just concluded 10th Leadership Retreat (Umwiherero), another well-tested home-grown tool, has again resolved to mobilise government officials to draw up and implement policies that will spur this nation. One of the major points that came out of the dialogue was to aim at transforming this country into a middle income economy in the next five years as envisaged in the Vision 2020 programme. It might seem some long shot, taking into consideration the health – or lack of it – of the world’s economy, but it is achievable if the trend of strategically facing problems head on, that has been the norm of the present government, continues. One pointer that gives credence to the possibility of achieving that goal are the latest statistics which prove that despite the poor performance of the global economy, Rwanda’s economy grew by 8 per cent, not withstanding that some donors had frozen aid.The service sector was the most impressive, recording a 12 per cent and contributing over 45 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP),Charting safely through the political and economic storms is not child play. History has shown that with dedication and forward thinking, nothing is insurmountable.
