Two Ugandan nationals were detained in Kigali after they were found in possession of counterfeit US dollars amounting to $26,000 (about Rwf16.5 million). The suspects, Police said, were arrested at a forex bureau in Nyabugogo Bus Terminal in Nyarugenge district. The duo was arrested on a tip off from an employee at the forex bureau (name withheld), where they were apparently trying to exchange the fake dollars. The whistleblower said the suspects, who are currently detained at Nyamirambo Police Station, approached him and tried to sell him the fake dollars at a subsidised exchange rate. "One came and told me that he has a friend with fake dollar notes to be sold at a subsidised price. It became difficult to arrest both of them, so I pretended that I had accepted their offer,” the informer said. The Nyarugenge Police Commander, Dismas Rutaganira, said though currency counterfeit cases have been reported in the district, those related to dollars were still few. The Central Region Police Spokesperson, Albert N. Gakara, warned anyone that could be involved in this criminal act, noting that measures are in place to apprehend them to face the wrath of the law.
