The Police in Bugesera district are holding a woman (name withheld) in connection with the death of her mother -in- law.The gruesome murder of  Goreth Nyirahabimana, 65, took place on March 15, in Gicaca cell, Musenyi sector.The suspect is alleged to have beheaded her mother-in-law using a machete, accusing her of witchcraft. Her arrest came after a resident who witnessed the inhuman, incident notified Police.She is currently detained at Nyamata Police Station, while the victim’s body was taken to ADEPR Nyamata Hospital for post-mortem.Preliminary investigations indicate that there was a misunderstanding between the suspect and the victim, where the latter wanted the former to be part of her witchcraft practice.It is said he victim has been mistreating her daughter-in-law after the latter refused to build her a shrine where she would worship her gods.The suspect said her mother-in-law has since been sending her evil spirits."I was tired of her threats and living a miserable life. I wanted to be free,” said the suspect, a mother of four, who confessed to the crime.Supt. Benoit Nsengiyumva, the Eastern Region Police Spokesperson, condemned the incident and called upon the community to report such family disputes to prevent such bloody acts.Man held over defilementMeanwhile, Police in Ndera sector, Gasabo district, are holding a man for allegedly defiling a 16-year-old girl.The suspect, who is currently detained at Ndera Police Post, allegedly committed the offence at the weekend.It is said the suspect, a security guard at Adventist University in Masoro, Gasabo, lured the victim into his room on the campus and defiled her.The victim’s family resides near the university.An eyewitness said he heard the girl moaning as he passed by the suspect’s house, only to find the suspect defiling her when he came to her rescue.The suspect was arrested by locals, who handed him over to Police.The District Police Commander, Supt Tom Murangira, condemned the act and attributed it to drug abuse."I am requesting parents to offer protection to their children and ensure that they are not exposed to strangers,” Murangira said. Usually such people have mental issues or are always under the influence of drugs. The community should help us identify those living within our society,” he said. He added that many of such culprits are drug addicts.
