Education Minister Vincent Biruta has commended the Catholic Institute of Kabgayi (ICK) for its achievements since inception 10 years ago.Dr Biruta, who was speaking at an event to mark the Muhanga-based institution’s 10-year anniversary, urged the faith-based institute to focus on specialisation."ICK has done a commendable work of implementing education programmes that greatly benefit communities surrounding the campus. I also appreciate the idea to increase faculties like that of education to provide teachers who will serve in secondary schools,” said Biruta.Recently ICK staff carried out a research in Ruhango, Muhanga and Kamonyi districts, focusing on poverty reduction and tailored policy strategies for the districts. The minister urged the university to continue doing research on various projects geared towards uprooting poverty in the country."Higher learning institutions should be the engine to development, they [universities] should strengthen research to help local leaders implement research-based programmes,” he said. The rector, Vincent Kagabo, said ICK has achieved a lot in 10 years, including increasing enrollment from 300 students in 2002 to more than 1,300 today.
