If you are a smoker, you will have to dig deeper into your pockets to buy the next puff. This comes after the prices of cigarettes increased by about 40 per cent.  One stick of Sweet Menthol that was at Rwf30 is now retailing at Rwf40.  A box of 50 packets of Intore cigarettes, which used to cost Rwf210,000 has been increased to Rwf282,000. However, in most shops in Kigali city are retailing a packet of Intore that used to cost Rwf500, at Rwf 1,000, indicating an increase of 100 per cent.Sources at BAT Rwanda said the increase was mainly due to a rise in production costs occasioned by the depreciation of the local currency."The Rwanda franc lost value, increasing the cost of production,” Keith Obure, the communications and corporate manager said, adding that fuel prices had also risen, forcing the firm to hike prices to meet costs. But old habits die hard. Some consumers said the increment had not affected their smoking habits, although their daily expenses rose by a huge margin."Even if one stick goes up to Rwf100, it will not stop me from smoking,” said Tiger Ndoli, 25.
