The Ministry of Agriculture and its agencies, on Wednesday, donated 20 cows to Genocide survivors in Gahanga sector, Kicukiro district. The cows were bought thanks to the personal contributions of staff members.Dr Agnes Kalibata, the Agriculture minister, said the donation, which comes ahead of this year’s Genocide Memorial,  was in the spirit of improving the livelihood of the survivors."The ministry lost many staff members in the Genocide and it has survivors, this is why we have attached  great value  to help the survivors each year,’’ she said. The Friesian cows were donated under Girinka programme to 20 families. One of the beneficiaries, Annoncée Bamurange, thanked the ministry for the gesture."I didn’t own a cow, but now I am ready to breed this one. I am also ready to give heifers to other poor households,” he said. The Mayor of Kicukiro district, Paul Jules Ndamage, said even if Gahanga sector is in Kigali City, the residents depend on agriculture and livestock, the reason the cows will help them increase their produce.
