Davite misses out on Bandama title

Davite Giancarlo and Slyvia Vindevogel were left crestfallen after missing out the Bandama rally podium finish when their Mitsubishi Evo X caught fire and they had to abandon the race with just 900m to the finishing line on the last stage on Sunday in Yamoussokro, Cote d’Ivoire.The Rwandan pair started well, finishing fourth in Super Special on Friday after using 2:29 minutes. They won the Special Saturday, topping the standings in 1:26:14.The pair and their fans in Rwanda were ready for celebrations but their car hit in a dip end to lose oil, stopping their trip to Bandama rally podium while in lead by 11:43 with 900m to the end of the last stage.Vindovogel said on her facebook page, "No words will ever translate our sadness. We are unspeakably hurt. Davite, I have no words to comfort you, but I’m very proud of you.”Being the only drivers from East and Southern African to compete in the race, the pair hoped to use the rally to accumulate maximum points from the first round of the Africa Rally Championship before shifting focus to the East and Southern Africa races as he bids to win his first continental title after settling for second in the last two years.Last year, Davite and Vindevogel finished second for a second year running behind Zambia’s Mohammed Essa in the FIA African Rally Championship.
