Police in Muhanga district are holding a 33-year-old man who allegedly killed his wife and handing himself over for arrest.Police say the suspect killed Nirere Restuda, 25, a resident of Nyarusange sector last Sunday night.Speaking from Nyamabuye police station, where he is being held, the suspect accused the deceased of having an affair with another man with whom she had a child some years ago. He narrated that on the fateful evening, they were out together with his wife, but she decided to go home earlier with the other man.  "When I reached home, I took a machete, knocked on the door, and waited. When they opened the door, the man hid himself and then with the machete, I cut the woman thinking that I was cutting the man who was in the house with my wife,” he said. The suspect says he realised he could not hide any more and decided to hand himself to the police in order to ask for forgiveness.Supt. Hubert Gashagaza, the Southern Regional Police spokesman, said campaigns have been stepped up to prevent such crimes."We are working together with residents and local leaders to prevent such crimes. We will sensitise families and communities through the media in order to prevent these crimes. This calls for all people to rise and fight against Gender-Based Violence, he said.Murder attracts life sentence on conviction.
