GICUMBI — Pupils of various primary schools in Miyove sector, Gicumbi District have received an assortment of materials donated by Save the Children.

The materials that included sports uniforms, exercise books, balls and radios were handed over on Monday by the coordinator for "Save the Children” Jacqueline Uwumukiza, during activities to mark the day of the African Child.

A guitar was also given out to the best child musician hailing from Mukarange Sector. "Education is the remedy to eradicate hard labour subjected to children,” said Uwumukiza.

The day was marked under the theme "Listen to children and accord them their rights.”

Speaking during the same occasion, the district Vice Mayor for Social Affairs Eugenie Uwamahoro, who represented Mayor Bonane Nyangezi cautioned residents against subjecting children to hard labour.

She noted that employing children in mines, in homes as maids and denying them the right to education were some of the ways of violating their rights.  "Children should be assisted to grow up as responsible citizens,” said Uwamahoro.

Traditional songs, dance, drama and poems recitation by primary and secondary school children in Miyove Sector highlighted the function.

Also present was the director of SOS Byumba Children Village Calixte Rwabuhungu.
