KIGALI City has launched a three-month campaign to sensitise people on maintaining the city cleanliness.The campaign will mainly focus on sensitising people and raising awareness on cleaning regulations and inspection to check compliance.It was initiated by Kigali City Council in partnership with the Belgian Technical Cooperation (BTC)."We have achieved a lot regarding cleaning and greening our city, but there are some areas to improve and hopefully this campaign will fill these identified gaps,” said the Kigali City Mayor Fidele Ndayisaba during the launch of the campaign at Nyamirambo Regional Stadium recently.Noting some of the gaps, Ndayisaba said that habits like dumping trash on streets or in gutters, and things like spitting in public are the areas they would tackle in the campaign through sensitisation drives.He said that people found dumping trash on the streets or on public land, or found in any other practice denting the city cleanliness, will be fined."Local leaders have to step up efforts in imposing fines to any person found littering streets with disposable water bottles and others materials. The money will be used to pay those people that clean our city,” Ndayisaba noted.Ndayisaba said there are ongoing programs to educate foreigners coming to Kigali on how to behave while in the City.The Inspector General of Police Emmanuel Gasana said the police will keep being committed to ensure compliance with regulations put in place to keep Kigali clean.He said RNP will give a trophy to the cleanest sector in Kigali City.
