President Paul Kagame on Friday, June 23, congratulated President Filipe Nyusi and the people of Mozambique on the successful implementation of the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of Renamo ex-combatants.

Hundreds of ex-combatants of Renamo, Mozambique's main opposition party, have been demobilized and returned to civilian life in Mozambique.

Kagame tweeted: "Congratulations to my brother President Filipe Nyusi and the people of Mozambique on the successful implementation of the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of Renamo ex-combatants, marking an important milestone towards completion of the Mozambican peace process.

"I was not able to be there today as planned but wish you and the people of Mozambique continued success.”

In 2019, Renamo, a former rebel movement-turned-opposition party, signed a peace accord to end armed hostilities.

The process comes at a time when Mozambican forces, alongside Rwandan troops and those from Southern African Development Community (SADC) nations, are battling an Islamic State-linked insurgency in the country’s northern province of Cabo Delgado.

Under a bilateral arrangement, Rwandan troops were deployed to Cabo Delgado in 2021 to stabilize the area and restore state authority.
