The Mayor of the City of Kigali has urged residents of Rwezamenyo Sector, Nyarugenge District to consolidate security in their own area.

Dr Aissa Kirabo was on Thursday addressing residents of the sector during her ongoing tour of the city aimed at assessing development programmes.

"You should participate fully in community policing programmes by conducting night patrols in collaboration with security organs. You know your area better than anybody else," Kirabo told residents of one of the most densely populated city suburbs.

She said that will help tackle insecurity and drug problems in the area. The residents attributed insecurity in the area to people from neighbouring sectors particularly from Butamwa on the eastern fringes of the city.

The residents also cited the high levels of unemployment as another cause for insecurity in the area.

"Historically, this area was inhabited in a disorganised manner and it continues to receive new settlers. You need to pool your resources together and develop yourselves by forming cooperatives," the Mayor advised.

She went on to say that the sector has many development projects such as the Rwezamenyo market, basket-making and tailoring, and urged residents to put those projects to good use.

Kirabo also urged them to live in harmony. "It does not matter where people come from, what is important is for everybody to work hard for development."

The mayor also promised that the city would soon repair Nyamirambo road, one of the worst roads in the city. She urged the residents to promote environment by growing and conserving trees and flowers, and to become exemplary in cleanliness.
