Four of the 11 Congolese refugees who were recently injured by a collapsing church building at Gihembe Refugee Camp, have been transferred to Kigali Central University Hospital (CHUK), an official said.

Innocent Muhire Rwasamanzi, the camp leader told The New Times at the weekend that the four were referred to Kigali after their conditions proved beyond the capacity of Byumba Hospital.

"Byumba Hospital did their part but later discovered the remaining part of treatment was beyond their capacity and ordered for their immediate transfer," Muhire said without identifying the names of the transferred victims.

Efforts to seek information about their state of health at the Kigali based hospital were futile by press time.

Muhire added that two of the injured refugees have been discharged from Byumba and have returned to their homes at the camp.

Meanwhile, he said the body of the victim who died on the spot was laid to rest on Thursday. The deceased only identified as Sadic, 29, was buried at about 1:30 pm at the refugee camp cemetery. He is survived by one child and a widow.

According to Muhire, about ten refugees have died of similar accidents since 1997 when the camp was opened.

He estimated that about 3000 refugees have been buried in the camp cemetery.

The latest accident happed last Tuesday when a church structure collapsed on the refugees during renovation. Eleven people sustained severe injuries while one died instantly.
