Rwanda’s main title hopefuls at this year’s Zone V Basketball Club Championship APR are set to feature in the opening game this evening at Amahoro indoor stadium.

According to the event organizers, Rwanda basketball federation (Ferwaba), APR’s opponent will only be known this afternoon when the last batch of foreign clubs arrives.

"We can not readily establish APR’s opponents because most of the clubs have not yet arrived,” the federation’s technical advisor Innocent Karuhije said yesterday.

The club event is open to both categories (men and women) and Rwanda is staging the event for the first time.

APR and Espoir are Rwanda’s representatives in the men’s category while APR and UNR represent the country in the women category.

Initially, 17 clubs had been expected to turn up for the competition but Ferwaba believes the number will be less after last minute pull-outs by some clubs.

Meanwhile, two of APR’s top players Blaise Nikobahoze and Kajeguhakwa Bunene remain doubts for today’s game after suffering hip and ankle injuries.

Cliff Owuor, APR’s head coach says that Nikobahoze has a hip problem while Bunene has a swollen ankle.

"They will be assessed on Saturday (today) morning because I want to give them every chance to play in our first game,” the former Kenyan international told Times Sport on Thursday.

The event’s defending champions Kenya Commercial Bank (men) and Kenya Ports Authority (women) arrived in the country yesterday.
