EASTERN PROVINCE

Matimba residents are shocked after the sacking of over 25 village authorities who allegedly accepted bribes during the national ID registration process.

The decision, taken by sector executive secretary Emmanuel Tumusiime,  affects the entire political hierarchy in the sector, where integrity amongst local leaders has come to a virtual death.

Many bribes are alleged to have been taken from illegal immigrants scared of returning to home districts or to face Gacaca trials.

Many after the 1994 Genocide moved to Nyagatare near the frontiers of the Uganda-Rwanda border.

Matimba executive secretary Tumusime Emmanuel says that the leaders resigned on their own initiative after "feeling frustrated” that they were not facilitated for working in the ID process.
