RWAMAGANA — Police in Rwamagana on Wednesday rounded up about 149 people in a security swoop. Those arrested included trespassers, redundant boys and prostitutes of Rwamagana town.

"The move is aimed at improving security. These people cause insecurity in the town," Inspector of Police Steven Gaga, told The New Times shortly after the operation.

He explained that those who were rounded up had no single identification document an indication he said, they really posed a security threat.

"64 of them were picked from Gishari sector while 85 were picked from their hideouts in Kigabiro sector. 12 of them are suspected to be prostitutes," Gaga said.

During the same operation, Gaga said, eight Burundi nationals without proper documents were also arrested. He said they would be deported soon. According to the police chief, the Rwandans who were rounded up would be re-located to their home districts.

Meanwhile during the operation, about 20 litres of crude gin (Waragi) and three kilograms of marijuana were netted. Police said the materials whose dealers and consumers were among those arrested, would be burnt soon.
