Police and local authorities should do more to curb drug abuse!

Dear editor,

I was terribly shocked a few days ago when I moved to a house and realized that my new residence in Nyamirambo is, unfortunately, right in the middle of a notorious Marijuana smoking [den].

To my surprise however, other residents and even local leaders here are used to this ill and every one of them go about their daily business without flinching whenever young boys and other culprits go on smoking Marijuana even in broad day light.

What was even more of a rude shock was my realization that even some of my neighbours and land-lords are in on the crime. To make matters worse, the Mudugudu chief knows this, especially some of the people selling and distributing marijuana.

Feeling hopeless, I have been talking to friends about this issue and many seem resigned to the calamity. People feel all police efforts in sorting out this mess simply yield nothing. The culprits are often apprehended but I have been made to understand that some are immediately released.

But alas! There should not be any excuse for this ill to continue. If no serious measures are put in place to stump it out however, soon or later we will be overwhelmed by the damage it is causing to our society. The police and local authorities should step up efforts against this social vice. And this means acting NOW!

Should the police need whistle blowers, I am quite sure many are willing to help.
