The land registration exercise will begin early next year and the process will continue for the next two years, the Deputy Registrar of Land Titles has confirmed.

Espérance Mukamana made the announcement this last week when launching a pilot phase of land registration which took place in Nyamugari Cell, Gatsata Sector in Gasabo District.

The exercise will take place in one cell in each of the selected four districts across the country under the ‘The Land Dispute Management Program (LDMP)’. Four cells were chosen from Gasabo, Kirehe, Karongi and Musanze districts for the land registration exercise.

"We want to start registering all land in all districts in January so that is why we had to do these trials to see how best to go about it in the future,” Mukamana said.

The deputy registrar added that the trials in Nyamugari were successful attributing it to the cooperation they received from the local people.

During the ceremony, the Rwanda Initiative for Sustainable Development (RISD) working in partnership with the government to strengthen the resolution of land disputes, conducted a public information and awareness campaign through a live community drama.

The drama was mainly aimed at educating the masses about their right to land and demonstrated how land wrangles can be resolved out of court by family members, neighbours and village leaders.
