Red-hot striker Léandre Willy Esombe Onana has expressed his delight at finishing as the 2022/23 Primus National League top scorer in what could be his last season at Rayon Sports.

Onana, who scored the winning goal against Sunrise during Sunday’s 1-0 victory in Nyagatare to extend his goal tally 16 goals in 23 games, has been defenders’ nightmare ever since he returned from injury in February.

"I’m very happy and delighted to finish the league as top scorer of this season. It’s a special moment for me to lead the scoring charts,” Onana said

"It’s a great achievement, and I’m so proud. I never thought about winning the top scorer accolade this season after I had an injury but I have achieved it. I have to say thank you to my teammates.”

Onana finished the scoring charts ahead of AS Kigali striker Hussein Tchabalala Shaban and Sunrise forward Yafessi Mubiru who are two goals behind him.

The Cameroonian has his eyes now shifted to not only helping Rayon Sports win the Peace Cup but also finish as the top scorer as well. The Blues face APR in the cup final on June 3 at Huye Stadium.

"I am looking forward to scoring in the final of the Peace Cup,” he said.

Onana joined Rayon Sports in August 2021 from Erding FC in his native Cameroon after passing trials.

He is now targeted by Tanzania Premier League side Simba who are said to have started talks with him.
