Rwanda to be regional supplier

Uganda Baati Ltd, a Ugandan-based steel processing company has announced the construction of a factory in Kicuciro, one of the suburbs in Kigali City. The factory similar to that they have in Kampala will soon start producing galvanised iron sheets.

According to the company, the Kigali factory will supply Burundi and the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with building materials, dealers and developers were sourcing from Uganda.

Jaideep Mohan, the General Marketing Manager of Uganda Baati said in a recent interview with The New Times that the demand for construction materials in Rwanda, Burundi and the eastern part of DRC has increased. 

"We could not solely rely on the imports from Uganda, the company agreed to construct a manufacturing plant,” Mohan said. Under their parent company Safal Group, Uganda Baati is investing 1.5 million dollars into the Safintra Rwanda plant.

Mohan said Rwanda is one of Africa’s fastest growing economies and a strategic economic hub in the Great Lakes region.

"Rwanda’s construction industry is fast growing and we thought we could play an important part,” remarked Mohan.
