The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has come out with a format to determine which countries will make it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Africa will have 10 slots at the next edition of the world's biggest soccer fiesta. The Confederation of African Football has unveiled the procedure for the qualification phase of the competition for teams under their jurisdiction following a meeting in Algiers on May 18.

It was decided that 54 nations will take part in the qualifiers in the Africa zone and they would be in nine groups comprising 6 teams each.

The team which finishes on top of the group automatically qualifies for the Mundial whereas the four best second-placed teams would engage in a playoff after which the winner would face a team from CONCACAF for one more qualification ticket.

The duration for the entire qualification for the CAF zone would be two years as it will start in November 2023 and end in November 2025.

No East African team has ever qualified for the World Cup. Rwanda will be aiming to be the first from the CECAFA region to qualify now that the slots have been increased to 10.
