Musanze – Rwanda Defence Forces’ Reserve Force, in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources, have completed construction of  over 800 cubic metre gabions along the water channels of Virunga Mountains. The Rwf 100 million project was undertaken to avert floods that have affected the area, leading to deaths and destruction of houses and farms."The floods from Virunga, especially Rwebeya, have been the biggest threat to our lives and crops. Many people have died because rains in the Virunga are not predictable. The gabions will save us from the heavy rains,” said Jean Baptiste Nshimiyimana, a resident of Kinigi. The Reserve force Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen Fred Ibingira, commended the force for the commitment and hard work shown during the construction of the gabions.Provincial Governor, Aime Bosenibamwe, rallied residents to embark on terracing and plant bamboos along the water gullies in order to save soils and agricultural production
