Rwanda and the United Kingdom are leading the way on global migration challenges, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said during a meeting with President Paul Kagame.
President Kagame and the First Lady Jeannette Kagame, are in London, UK, for King Charles III’s coronation slated for May 6 at Westminster Abbey in London. The King will be crowned alongside Queen Consort, Camilla.
Kagame’s discussion with the UK Prime Minister is part of a series of meetings the Head of State is expected to host during his visit to London.
"This afternoon in London, President Kagame met with U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street for a meeting during which they discussed various topics, including the ongoing Migration and Economic Development Partnership, global events as well as further opportunities for bilateral collaboration to increase trade and investment,” a statement from the Office of the President reads in part.
Local media reports indicate that, while at 10 Downing Street, both leaders reiterated their commitment to pursuing the partnership between the two countries that will have asylum seekers relocated to Rwanda, as a measure to deter illegal immigration and criminal activities around it.

In London, President Kagame also met with the President of Guyana, Mohamed Irfaan Ali, for discussions on strengthening bilateral cooperation in key areas to further social-economic development.
President Kagame, who is Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth, met with Commonwealth Secretary-General Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland ahead of the Commonwealth Leaders Meeting.
As the current Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth, Kagame will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Leaders’ Meeting scheduled for Friday, 5 May 2023.
King Charles III, who also serves as the Head of the Commonwealth, will also attend the meeting.

On the same day, First Lady Jeannette Kagame will take part in the fireside chat titled ‘Inspiring Change: Together for the elimination of cervical cancer in the Commonwealth’, as part of the Commonwealth spouses and partners programme.
