Kirehe-At least Rwf 3 billion has been earmarked for the construction of a modern Genocide memorial site in Nyarubuye, Kirehe District.A former Catholic Church, Nyarubuye memorial is home to the remains of more than 51,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.The site, along with six others that include Kigali, Rebero, Nyanza, Nyamata, Bisesero, and Murambi, were selected as national memorials.Dieudonne Kayitare, an official from the National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG), told The New Times yesterday that construction work is already in progress.The first phase of consruction is half way done. The cemetery we are replacing was constructed as an emergency after the Genocide. Time has come now to have a permanent site,’ he said.Kayitare, however, decried lack of information, regarding the whereabouts of remains that are yet to be retrieved and accorded a decent burial."We have only managed to compile the names of 28,000 victims...we are still compiling the list of victims’ names. Only a handful of people give us help”."The memorial sites we are constructing will preserve the remains for over 1000 years.
