A rescue operation at the Petit Meridien building, which collapsed on Tuesday, killing one person. The New Times File.

Editor,I wish to react to a story that appeared in The New Times this week about a Kacyiru building which collapsed, killing one person and injuring several others. Police has made a couple of arrests, with the media reporting that among those arrested are the owners of the building and the person who was in charge of the demolition. However, I also think that local authorities in the area have something to answer about this tragedy. It is hard to believe that this illegal demolition was going on, under their nose, without their knowledge? What do they do actually? I believe they are supposed to be inspecting and knowledgeable about everything that goes on in their area, let alone a storey building being demolished in broad-day light. Equally, I think the inspection team at KCC should be held responsible as well.JohnGasabo Editor,Would we be hearing of the mistakes related to illegal demolition or construction if the building had not collapsed? Kigali City Council must make sure that all people building in Kigali have to follow rules.I think it is high time investigations are carried out to ascertain whether all buildings in Kigali were constructed legally.KafunaKacyiru
