Though it seemed like RnB had taken the lion’s share of music in Rwanda, of late Rwandan Hip-Hop has defied the odds and it’s swiftly building it’s self a following.Among the people responsible for this u-turn is a generation of young people whose Hip-Hop songs are getting ample air play on local radio stations. Chief among them is, ‘The Travel’ a.k.a Obed Mugisha, a 21 year old young musician student at Rwanda Tourism University College-RTUC."As a young kid, my friends and family told me that I was a good musician because I was found of singing and grasping songs on radio with ease. Since then, I knew I was blessed with a talent that I needed to promote,” explains ‘The Travel’ when I asked him why he chose music among all things.Though he only has a few finished songs on his up-coming album that he’s yet to name, ‘The Travel’ is certainly one figure that will further propel Hip-Hop in Rwanda basing on the fact that he has already attracted the attention of great names in the field."Like most rising Hip-Hop artistes, I started doing free styles in bars and gatherings. Then I got a chance and I was spotted by Riderman, someone I consider as my mentor today.”According to ‘The Travel’, Riderman, through his Nyamirambo based Ibisumizi Studio, has helped him record two of his songs, ‘Njewe nawe’ and ‘Nuzugera umfata’. The latter he explains, "talks about a person I heard beef with. I was telling him to forget about ever getting to my standards.”Music and mainly Hip-Hop are found of all weird things, but stage names are the winner. His name ‘The Travel’ (I know you’ve been asking yourselves, "why ‘The Travel’ of all names”) originates from the land of nicknames; School. While in high school, ‘The Travel’ was found of dodging classes which prompted his peers to call him ‘The Travel’ because whenever his teachers asked where he was during class hours, he answered,  "I’d travelled.”However he add: "At university, I don’t dodge classes any more, all that happened in high school was due to my stupid age but thankfully, I got a stage name.” If you were wondering how ‘The Travel’ is capable of going to school while on the other hand he’s trying to build a career, the 1st year student says that all his life, he has always wanted to get a degree, and that music is just a hobby and then, there’s nothing wrong with  a musician getting a degree.Almost all of us have people we’ve always looked up to mainly in the different professions we have. Locally, ‘The Travel’ is an admirer of Riderman and Pfla because, he says, "their music inspired me to hit the studios.”Internationally, ‘The Travel’ is a staunch fan of Eminem and Lil Wayne though he admits that there are many international artistes that have had a tremendous impact on his career including Tupac, whose songs he says, introduced him to the world of Hip-Hop.Though he’s been around for quite a short time, ‘The Travel’ who is set to release his debut album this year acknowledges that music and mainly Hip-Hop in Rwanda have taken satisfactory strides but also warns that they (musicians) should work harder until Rwandan music is recognized internationally.
