Tanzania government is to conduct a nationwide study on the magnitude of counterfeit products later this year aimed at evaluating the impact of counterfeits on the country’s economies, consumers and the government, said in a statement here on Friday.The statement issued by Fair Competition Commission (FCC) said that the study will be carried out in various regions after completion of an exercise to select a consultant to recommend appropriate policy options and strategies to deal with the vice.The study will determine the source of the problem and identify the violators and possible reasons, examine the major factors of production and consumption of counterfeits and establish the most possible entry point for the goods. In addition, it will assess the effectiveness of institutional and legal framework in the fight against counterfeiting and structure of the markets for counterfeit products.According to the executive director of Tanzania Consumer Society (TCAS), Bernard Kihiyo, counterfeit goods would stop flowing into the country and the rest of the East African Community member states only after the governments destroyed the syndicate behind the importation, distribution and sale of the sub- standard goods.
