Football governing body (FERWAFA) vice president Marcel Habyarimana has assumed office as the federation’s incumbent president following the resignation of outgoing president Olivier Mugabo Nizeyimana.

Nizeyimana announced his resignation from office on Wednesday, April 19, citing personal reasons including what he termed as "a lot of work.”

The former Mukura Victory boss was voted into office on June 27, 2021 in an Extraordinary General Assembly at the Lemigo Hotel in Kigali on a four-year term.

He has been in office for less than two years and his premature resignation means that Habyarimana will fill in the position for the remaining two years’ time until June 2024 when the next president will be elected.

It is the second time Habyarimana assumes office as Ferwafa incumbent president. He did the same between April and June 2021 Rtd Brig. General, Jean-Damascène Sekamana announced his premature resignation.

After the term expired, Nizeyimana named Habyarimana in his executive committee after he was elected new Ferwafa president in June 2021.
