A cross-section of Rwandans and indeed the world, yesterday, woke up to the tragic news of the demise of Whitney Houston; one of the greatest music voices to grace planet earth. The diva’s demise is without doubt going to be the talk in all streets, offices and hospitality facilities. After learning of her death, The New Times sought the reactions of various Rwandans on the poignant passing on of the music icon. When I heard about the news of her demise, I felt very sorry for her family especially her daughter since her death came as a surprise. It’s always very sad to lose a mother. I think the music industry has also lost a great person not forgetting the movie industry that she also ventured into. Whitney Houston did a lot in promoting music and culture. She didn’t only do this in the USA because she was considered an idol all over the world. I’m very sure there are many Rwandan musicians and actors she has inspired to become what they are today. Her death should be a warning to all that we should work hard to promote the societies we live in and develop the country because you never know when your day will come.Whitney Houston is one of the musicians I looked up to while trying to develop my music career. She had an outstanding voice that many musicians admired. What hurt me most was the fact she died while she was in the stages of rebuilding her once glorious career.Protais Mitali; Minister, Sports and CultureAs a lady, Whitney was seen as a very successful image of a woman. She is one of those people who have stood up and proved to the world that a woman can be very successful. Her death is a reminder to all musicians and entertainers that once they are at the top of their careers, they should strive and make it better instead of being excitedMiss Jojo; RnB musician

Whitney Houston’s death was very shocking. She is one of those musicians who entertained us during our times. Whitney had an extra-ordinary voice and the music industry is going to find it hard to find a person of her talent. Her best songs are ‘I will always love you’ and ‘You’ll never stand alone’ though I have to accept I’ve been a big fan of all her music. As a person, I think her death should be a wake-up call to all of us. It should remind us that we are not immortal. Again, as Rwandans, her death should teach us to live a life that is exemplary because most of the times, the good things you do while here are a lesson to many generations thereafter.Clare Akamanzi; COO, Rwanda Development Board
