Making Medical Injections Safer (MMIS) has stressed the importance of the safe disposal of used syringes.

On Thursday, diabetes sufferers were taught the dangers of careless handling of their syringes. Many diabetes patients inject themselves with insulin using provided syringes.

The Country Director of MMIS/John Snow Incorporated, Dr. Mamadou Adama Diallo, explained why responsible needle use is paramount.

Children have been found playing with dirty needles.
HIV/AIDS and the two types of hepatitis B and C that are spread through mismanagement of medical waste, Dr. Diallo stressed.

It was revealed that 80 per cent of health facilities do not have proper incinerators for the disposal of the needle.
