I wish to respond to a story titled "Local leader suspended over corruption” that appeared in The NewTimes, dated January, 22.

I am not writing to apportion blame to Gilbert Niyonshuti, the former Executive Secretary of Kigasha Cell in Ngarama Sector for his involvement in fraud as this is a court matter. However, his suspension taints the rather good name of the entire district.

Leaders are supposed to be role models in society and failure to observe high integrity puts into question the credibility of others.

In other countries, people would rather bypass issues of corruption but not in Rwanda where there is zero tolerance to corruption.

It is a big lesson to other districts because in Gatsibo, it was the courage of residents that pinned Niyonshuti for his alleged involvement in fraud.

Indeed, fighting corruption is everybody’s responsibility and residents should carry on to unearth anything fishy in their midst.
