Only after all garages in Gasatsa relocate will we have a lasting solution to the issue of environment in the area. The NewTimes / File.

Editor,

Allow me through your newspaper to commend the Rwanda Environmental Management Authority (REMA) for its untiring efforts in conserving and protecting the environment.

A case in point is the joint initiative by Kigali City Council and REMA to relocate garages, formerly operating in a designated wetland in Gatsata Sector, Gasabo District, which was a great relief to area residents.

However, I wish to contest the relocation which I believe was handled selectively. While some garage owners departed, others still operate from the area in spite of  the expiry of the deadline.

It is clear that the Executive secretary of Gatsata Sector, Joseph Kabanda had maintained that authorities would forcibly close down all the garages after the deadline.

However, it is regrettable that some of the residents in the sector have allegedly been drinking toxic water as a result of activities carried out in these garages. Subsequently, a lasting solution must be sought without fear or favour.
