Taekwondo pair fall short of Olympic mark

IRENE Bagire and Placide Bagabo fell short of Olympic slots at last week’s WTF Africa Olympic qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt.

Bagire, who was competing in the 58kg weight category, lost out to Libya’s Mohammed while Bagabo could not see off his Congolese opponent in the 68kg weight category.

Nine countries managed to secure slots at the London Games. Egypt clinched four tickets, followed by Morocco with three. Nigeria and the Central African Republic grabbed two each while Gabon, Algeria, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Tunisia secured one each.
