RUTSIRO - A 35year old man, Damascene Bisima Muhindo, is currently under police custody for allegedly raping his nine-year old stepdaughter in Rutsiro district.

Muhindo, a Congolese national, was arrested after the young girl complained of vaginal pains last Friday.

Upon reaching the police station the suspect confessed to committing the crime when the girl was asleep.

"The girl was sleeping with her younger sister and the mother (my wife) had gone to fetch water when I committed the crime,” Bisima narrated.

He revealed that soon after, the young girl started complaining of pain around her private parts.

Local authorities were tipped off and Bisima was arrested. Medical reports from Rubavu district hospital indicate that the little girl was indeed raped.

The suspect is set to appear before Karongi intermediate court, and if convicted, he faces up to 25 years in jail.
