The looming battle for banking the un-banked

There is a new threat in town that Mr Herman Klaassen current CEO of Bank Populaire Du Rwanda (BPR), Rwanda’s bank of the masses, and indeed other local commercial bankers will have to take very seriously this year. Central bank last year gave Kenya’s Equity Bank a commercial banking license. In its citation of awarding Equity Bank entry into Rwanda, Central bank lauded Equity Bank for its famed approach in banking the un-banked.

Such a citation is something that naturally should prompt the existing players to rethink their strategy for the new year. That is the main reason Samuel Kirubi, Equity’s top manager in Rwanda should be a man to make news as his bank seeks to gain a foothold in the country.
