Editor,

THE New Times, this week, quoted the East African Community Minister, Monique Mukaruliza, as saying that Rwanda businesses must be more innovative and aggressive and tap into regional natural resources, particularly water bodies.

The minister is right because when you look around, a number of countries in the region are endowed with abundant resources, but the private sector hardly take advantage of that. For instance, this region is home to numerous lakes and rivers which can provide more than enough water for irrigation but some of our communities are always threatened by starvation.

Yet once exploited accordingly, the maritime can help turn the entire regional into one of the world’s food baskets.
