NYAGATARE – Traders in Nyagatare District have expressed concerns over delays in the planned construction of a modern market.

According to the traders, district authorities have, on several occasions, promised to construct a modern market in Nyagatare town to no avail.

"We suffer during both the dry and rainy seasons. We have been complaining about lack of a modern market for a long time,” said one of the traders.

The current site where traders work from also poses sanitation challenges.

"The sewage system is non-functional. District authorities should consider building the market as soon as possible,” said Claude Hakizimana.

Akamad  Rukwago, president of Nyagatare Traders Union, said: "A modern market is essential for a growing town like Nyagatare. But authorities have not come through on their repeated promises. They always say next year…next year”.

However, the district Mayor, Fred Atuhe Sabiiti, said plans are underway to work with private individuals to ensure that the market is constructed soon.

"We have a big project of constructing a modern hotel, this year, in partnership with private individuals, and this will go along with construction of a modern market,” he announced.
