NYAMASHEKE–In a late operation Monday, police in Nyamasheke District recovered over 200 litres of paraffin and 500 litres of petrol which was stolen from Chinese Road and Bridge Construction Company.

Also recovered were other construction equipment like pipes, cement and canes.

The materials were recovered from Shangazi trading centre, Nyamasheke district. The fuel alone is said to be worth over Rwf  700,000.

The company is constructing the Kigali-Nyungwe highway and Gisenyi-Rusizi highway as well as a series of feeder roads in Rusizi and Nyamasheke districts.

"It’s sad that the construction works are hampered by some of the supposed beneficiaries themselves. The Chinese company has reported several times that stealing of their property slows down the construction works,” said Superintendent Yusuf Gasana, District Police chief, Nyamasheke.

Two people, Charles Nkurunziza and Gaspard Izabitegeka were arrested in connection with the theft. But they denied involvement.

"I sell fuel and I buy it from petrol stations around Kamembe. I know the Chinese company’s items get stolen but I don’t have a hand in it,” said Nkurunziza.
