A three day workshop on strengthening education administrative data management system in districts, was recently conducted in Kigali to equip officials with skills to address issues that remain prevalent in the sector. They acquired skills in data collection, and planning for the needs of learners basing on their age and sex, and how teachers can be rolled out basing on the accurate data.
A three day workshop on strengthening education administrative data management system in districts, was recently conducted in Kigali to equip officials with skills to address issues that remain prevalent in the sector.

The training brought together 60 participants from the Ministry of Education and the Workforce Development Authority (WDA) as well as statistics officers from all districts, and it mainly aimed at strengthening the education information management at district levels.
"The first step was to review the current status, interpret the performance and identify those indicators that require improvement,” noted Ernest Rutungisha, an Education Management Information Systems Expert and one of the facilitators.
Organized by the National Institute of Statistics (NISR) and sponsored by the Belgian Technical Cooperation (BTC) through the Public Sector Capacity Building Secretariat (PSCBS), the workshop was meant to enable education planners, researchers and administrators evaluate various indicators of education using the data on school education.
The participants were equipped with the knowledge of definitions, calculations, methods and formulas of arriving at the correct data in the education sector, and how it can be interpreted for planning and other purposes.
"When the ratio of illiteracy, for example, is high in a certain geographical locale, it may call for the establishment of adult education facilities or programmes.
But before doing so, you need to make sure that the data on which you are basing your plans is accurate,” observed Samuel Sindayigaya, an NISR expert in charge of education.
"This workshop has been very instrumental in fortifying our appreciation of administrative data. We have discussed with District Education Officers how to organize agreed metadata and the collection tools,” noted Felicien Rimenyande from WDA.
