We all need a break! A holiday is a holiday. I really wish there was a way we could all enjoy them but unluckily it is not like that. Doctors, journalists, waiters and the like are just some of the people who do not have the luxury of enjoying public holidays.

A holiday is a holiday. I really wish there was a way we could all enjoy them but unluckily it is not like that. Doctors, journalists, waiters and the like are just some of the people who do not have the luxury of enjoying public holidays.
Moreover, that would be okay if they are paid for working overtime. Some companies find it necessary to drag their employees to the office on public holidays without so much as a free doughnut to go with their coffee.
Do you have any idea what it’s like to sit in an empty office swarmed with work on Christmas morning? Just the thought of not even being able to make it back home for lunch is disheartening. However, what would make that misery worthwhile would be a bonus of sorts. Nobody frowns at a cheque, especially a cheque that has nothing to do with the salary!
That is just in the case of offices; now, imagine the kind of depression that lurks in a hospital? Even a jolly looking Christmas card on the doc’s desk would seem inappropriate since the hospital itself is one big despair! It is hard to determine who to feel sorry for the most; the patient hanging onto his life or the doctor fighting tooth and nail to make sure the patient doesn’t let go!
Yet doctors on the other hand, do not really have a choice in the matter because the job needs them to be alert literally all the time. But, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be compensated for all the hard work they do. Raising their salary is one way to say ‘thank you’.
In addition to that, hospitals should ensure that they are well equipped with staff to make it possible for them to get leave. With few doctors and nurses, the hospital cannot afford to have even the janitor missing!
Seriously, no matter how vital someone’s job is, breaks are necessary! Think about the strain overworked people bring to their family or relationships. With half the couple gone, there is not much to celebrate. Imagine the only day—Christmas—where kids are positive everyone will be home, daddy can’t stay because he is the captain of KLM and has a flight to London pronto.
People will work overtime if they have to. What matters is how these people are compensated. We all need a break at one point in our lives because we are not programmed like robots. Have you ever heard of a nervous breakdown?
There should be a balance in staff members so that everyone can get a day off from time to time without worrying about work progress.
Ambition is great but it should also have its limits.
