APR started their Orange Champions League preparations with a convincing 2-0 victory over AS Kigali yesterday. Papy Faty and Barnabe Mubumbyi scored the goals for the army side, which is scheduled to play Kenyan champions Tusker FC in the preliminary round of the competition.

Last year, APR suffered a premature exit from the competition after losing Tunisia’s Club Africain. After being held to a 2-all draw in the first leg in Kigali, it was always going to be a toll order for Ernie Brandts’ side and it indeed proved so as they succumbed to a 4-0 defeat in the return leg which was played in Tunis.

However, Brandts is eager to guide his side to the group stages this time round. The first leg between APR and Tusker will be played on the weekend of February 17-19 in Nairobi with the return leg scheduled for early March in Kigali.

The winner will go on to face ESS of Tunisia in the next round.

Meanwhile, SC Kiyovu were paired with Tanzania’s Simba in the Orange Confederation Cup.

After a two-legged contest, the winner will face Algeria’s Es Setif in the next round.
