NYANZA-Police in Nyanza District have arrested an 18-year old man who allegedly killed his father over property wrangles.

Noel Hakizimana is suspected to have killed his father Raban Nkomeje, 52, both residents of Karama Cell, Cyabakamyi Sector.

Hakizimana, who was arrested Monday, is detained at Busasamana Police Station.

It is alleged that Nkomeje sought to sell a family cow, a move his son had purportedly disapproved.

Married to two wives, Nkomeje had reportedly also declined to offer his son a share of the family wealth.

However, some area residents told The New Times that Hakizimana incessantly threatened his father, pointing out that he may have been pushed to commit the crime by his mother. But Hakizimana denies the charge though he admits killing his father.

"It was not a plan I had schemed earlier. I met him as he headed home and I stoned him. He immediately collapsed and I used a metallic cord to strangle him,” Hakizimana confessed, emphasising that he had committed the crime alone.

"I was really not happy with my father because he refused to feed us while he sought to sell our cow,” he added.

Statistics from Nyanza District authorities indicate that over the last two months, five people had been murdered while two others had committed suicide.
